Must-Do Trails and Hikes in the Algarve

The Algarve is a hiker’s paradise, offering dramatic coastal walks atop golden cliffs and tranquil journeys through untouched nature reserves. These trails showcase the region’s diverse beauty, leading to secluded beaches and providing breathtaking ocean panoramas.

☀️ Iconic Coastal Cliffside Walks

The central and western Algarve is famous for its stunning limestone cliffs, sea stacks, and grottoes, best explored on foot.

  • Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos (Seven Hanging Valleys Trail):
    • Highlights: Widely considered one of the best hikes in Europe, this trail runs approximately 5.7 km (3.5 miles) one-way between Praia da Marinha and Praia do Vale de Centeanes.
    • Features: It offers mesmerizing views of the iconic golden cliffs, sea arches, and stacks. You walk directly above the famous Benagil Cave (though you need a boat or kayak to access the hidden beach inside).
    • Hidden Beaches: The trail passes above several beautiful, coved beaches like Praia do Carvalho (accessible via a unique tunnel) and Praia da Marinha.
  • Lagos Coast Walk to Ponta da Piedade:
    • Highlights: A must-do walk near Lagos that takes you along the cliff tops overlooking the stunning Ponta da Piedade headland.
    • Features: The area is a natural monument of ochre cliffs, sculpted archways, and coves. You can descend staircases near the lighthouse for incredible, close-up views of the turquoise water.

🌿 Untouched Nature and Inland Trails

To experience the Algarve’s greener, quieter side, head inland or to the wilder western and eastern coasts.

  • Rota Vicentina (Fishermen’s Trail Sections):
    • Highlights: Part of a larger network, the Fishermen’s Trail follows the rugged, Atlantic coastline of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
    • Features: This trail is known for its spectacular, unspoiled scenery, high cliffs, wild beaches, and the unique phenomenon of white storks nesting on the ocean cliffs. The section around Pontal da Carrapateira offers impressive vistas of the rugged coast.
  • Via Algarviana:
    • Highlights: This is a long-distance trail (about 300 km) that crosses the hilly interior of the Algarve, from the Spanish border all the way to Cabo de São Vicente.
    • Features: It takes you away from the coast and through the peaceful serra (mountains) and barrocal (inland hills), passing through towns like Monchique. The hike to the highest point, Pico da Fóia (902m), offers panoramic views of the entire region.
  • Ria Formosa Natural Park (Ludo Trail):
    • Highlights: A perfect spot for birdwatching and easy, leisurely walks.
    • Features: This coastal lagoon system, stretching for 60 km, features boardwalks and paths across saltpans, marshes, and wetlands, providing a habitat for diverse birdlife, including flamingos and chameleons.

💡 Local Tip: Bring water, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes — some trails are challenging but rewarding.
